Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv stands today as a venerable institution with a distinguished research profile, serving as the foremost academic and educational nucleus of Ukraine. Only a university with a rich history of scholarly accomplishment, both in pedagogy and research, could undertake such a formidable mission.
On April 21, 1994, Kyiv University was accorded the esteemed status of "National" by Leonid Kravchuk, the President of Ukraine, through Decree № 176/94. Subsequently, on November 25, 1999, Decree № 1496/99, issued by President Leonid Kuchma, significantly expanded the university's autonomous status. Viktor Yushchenko, the President of Ukraine at the time, further affirmed this trajectory through Decree № 412/2008 on May 5, 2008, marking the university's pivotal role as the primary educational and scientific center for cultivating highly qualified academic and teaching staff.
Further enhancing its stature, on July 29, 2009, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, through Regulation № 795, bestowed upon the university the status of a self-governing and autonomous national research institution, accompanied by augmented funding to fuel its future growth and development.

In the near future, the Open University of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv intends to introduce study programs in English, German, Arabic, and Russian.
The university conducts 100% online education for international students, while local Ukrainian students or residents are expected to study at the main campus.
